Moscow State Circus! / Preston Park / 16th May – 8th June 2012

The Moscow State Circus brings its latest most spectacular show to date to the UK with this sensational extravaganza Babushkin Secret.

Inspired by ‘The Legend of The Twelve Chairs’, the new show takes us on an incredible journey in the company of, without doubt, the greatest non-animal circus performers on earth.
Featuring a mammoth cast of Russia’s greatest circus artistes.

The newly devised show includes the beautiful queen of Russian circus, Yana Alievia on a revolving aerial chandelier; the breathtaking Stalkions (three men and two girls walk, back flip and perform unbelievable pyramids 30 feet in the air on the legendary high wire); the Whirlwind Rubsovsm troupe who acrobatically catapult themselves across and high into the big top at breakneck speed; the juggling Sherbakovs on the reverse pyramid of St Petersburg; the Doktrovs, flying and spiraling in the apex of the big top with grace, beauty and elegance; the unbelievable vertical pole balancing of The Alikanov and the high flying bouncing bamboo bravados of The Perushkins.

If all this isn’t enough to keep you on the edge of your seats, then the hilarious clowns, Valik & Valerik will have you falling off them with laughter.

Add to this the sensational production that is housed in a specially designed climate controlled chapiteau big top that is uniquely domed to accommodate the complex rigging for the aerial acts, it is supported by only four ‘king’ poles so as not to obscure the audience’s view.

Performance times: 16-29th May, show times at 5pm and 7.45pm each day (apart from Tues 29th May only at 5pm).

£28 / £21 – Ringside Seats

Elvis Costello – The Revolver Tour – Wed May 16

Elvis Costello will bring the Spectacular Spinning Songbook to The Brighton Centre on Wednesday 16th May 2012!

An overture of five uninterrupted rock and roll tunes announces Elvis Costello and the Imposters to the stage, after which members of the audience are invited to spin the gigantic vaudevillian contraption and select the next song.

Fortune may deliver such hits such as “Oliver’s Army”, “Everyday I Write The Book” and “Watching The Detectives” or land on a “Jackpot” selection such as “Time” and “Girl”, demanding a sequence of songs, each containing these words.

Such career highlights as “Shipbuilding” or “God Give Me Strength” can spin into view alongside hidden gems from the Costello songbook like, “Town Cryer” or tunes by The Rolling Stones, Johnny Cash and, of course, Bob Dylan’s “This Wheel’s On Fire”.

Rolling Stone said the show combined, “the kitsch of a game show and lounge act:….when he wasn’t singing or slamming at his guitars, Costello worked the stage like a burlesque-club emcee, cracking wise at a mile a minute and spinning a dandy’s walking stick.”

Continuing the theme of costume dramas, the Quilters Guild of the British Isles collection, The Romance of Words, is helping to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s ‘Sense and Sensibility’.  Embracing the theme of romance in the written form, each quilt has captured the imagination of the maker and presents literal and lateral interpretations of the subject.

Poetry in Stitches will continue the collaboration of words and craft with the last round of this ever-popular project from the National Needlework Archive.  Inspired by poetry, textile artists have been asked to combine the two forms to complement each other.  This exhibit will feature some of the best and truly stunning interpretations.

Dry The River At Corn Exchange May 11 – Brighton

Dry The River

Forming  from the ashes of Hardcore and Post-Punk bands in 2009, their re-birth was punctuated by frontman Peter’s compulsion to create music that was a complete departure from their collective efforts. Acoustic instruments removed them from their comfort-zones and they focused predominantly on honing a new direction through live shows. They developed a blend of Alternative Folk and began building a fanbase, but mounting pressure from their label soon lead to the creation of debut album ‘Shallow Bed’, though it didn’t come easily.

Only in Brighton Tour from 27th April to 27th May – VisitBrighton

A celebration of all that’s unique to Brighton

What connects Abba and a panty-less celebrity? Mount Everest and Tescos in Hove? A stained wall and the genesis of a worldwide retail brand? What’s the story behind a same-sex wedding in 1923…Britain’s ‘most useless’ monarch…a certain Parisian radio station? Why is my charming Regency property crumbling? And what’s up with the local paper? Only in Brighton…

Only in Brighton is a vivid 80-minute guided walk. It is a curiously fact-filled and tongue-in-cheek look at the landmarks, past and present, that make Brighton a city like no other. For the visitor, it is an insider’s introduction; for the hardened Brightonian, a revelation and celebration. This personal tribute cuts to the heart of a unique city in all its glory, shame and muesli.

‘…a celebration of the odd, bizarre and downright naughty….blatant passion for the city and fascination for the peculiar…Never has learning about a grimy brick wall down some leaky passageway been so titillating’ - G Scene Magazine

Cost: £7 (£6 student/retired)
